St. Dominics 1-15 Creggs 0-6

St. Dominics sauntered around the pitch for the opening 30 minutes of this contest played in beautiful conditions on Sunday afternoon. The half time score of 0-5 apiece was a fair reflection on the posession stakes. From St. Dominics point of view, a litany of errors went unpunished and Creggs could have been in front if they had taken some of their easier chances, Andrew Grady was forced to clear off the line to save the homesides blushes. Conor Fallon had earlier opened St. Dominics account and three frees from the same player along with one from Finneran kept the sides evenly matched on the scoreboard.

The second half was a completely different story. Michael Finneran and Niall Naughton dominated the midfield. Niall Naughtons ability to win breaks proved invaluable in this game and his tenacious tackling can be over zealous, but the same cannot be said of the Creggs keeper who can count himself lucky to remain on the pitch after a disgraceful headbutt on Naughton. This incident, early in the second half only encouraged St. Dominics to step up a gear and dominate to the end.

Creggs scored an early point from a free and that was the final time they troubled the umpires. Despite their superiority, St. Dominics kicked too many wides. However, good scores from play through Murray, McKeown and the swashbuckling David Corcoran demonstrated this teams undoubted abilities. With ten minutes remaining, Arthur Beades pass was flicked to the net by Finneran in a three man move and Mckeowns point a minute from the end left St. Dominics with a 12 point victory.

Padraig O'Connor impressed at centre back and the full back line of Grady, Naughton and Corcoran held their much vaunted opponents to three first half points from play.

St. Dominics 1-12 Clan na Gael 1-10

Johnstown on Bank Holidy Monday 2nd June @1:30pm. Ref: M Parker

St. Dominics won this crucial encounter in Johnstown on Monday. After previously dropping 3 points from four when holding 6 point leads, St. Dominics reversed this trend and produced a superb comeback to beat Clan na Gael.

Michael Finneran started and finished the move which drew us level with 10 minutes left. Catching the kickout, he passed to sub, Liam Murray who played a one two with Conor Fallon. Fallon in turn found Finneran who had continued his run and he stepped inside a tacke to hit the onion bag from 20 yards.

With the momentum, St. Dominics now pushed on and were good value for their 2 point win.

It s been 25 years since St. Dominics gained the upper hand at Senior level and this should instil a confidence in them to establish themselves as a Senior club.

Padraig Naughton was another who was superb, giving Donie Shine a lesson in Senior Football while Liam Murray and Seamie McKeown made big impacts when introduced.

St. Dominics 2-10 St. Michaels 2-10

Knockcroghery on Saturday 26th April @5:00pm. Ref: J Reilly

St. Dominics again let a 6 point lead slip and ended Satuday evening with one point instead of two after a last minute goal from a free allowed St. Michaels to level the match.

Playing with th e breeze in the first half, St. Dominics had led by 1-6 to 3 points late in teh 1st half but slack defending allowed the visitors in for a goal to leave just three between the sides at half time 1-7 to 1-4.
A '45 from Michael Finneran and point from Niall Naughton levelled the sides at two apiece before St. Dominics went through a purple patch. Finneran fielded a kickout and his sol through the defence set up a shot from 16 yards for conor fallon who hit the top corner. Two impressive Finneran scores from outside the 50 yard line, and a rampaging David corcoran run from corner back to score a sweet point, it was all one way traffic. However sloppy passing and poor handling broke down many attacks. Ultan Kelly, on as a substitute hit his first of the afternoon, before a rare Cootehall attack yielded a goal.

Again starting brightly in the second half, Finnerans long probing ball found Kelly who made no mistake straight in front of goal, but again, the similar pattern of turnovers cost the home side. Whereas our attacks broke down, St. Michaels greater economy in the esecond half allowed them to keep in touch. Only Conor Fallon scored for St. Dominics in the final 10 minutes and with time almost up, we appeared to have ridden our luck. St. Michaels 14 yard free in the dying minutes however ,somehow found its way to the back of the net to give them a draw , somewhat against the run of play.

St. Dominics: Aidan Fallon; Trevor Brennan; Padraig Naughton; David Corcoran(0-1); Ian Naughton; Mark Miley; Tom Gately; Arthur Beades; Michael Finneran(0-3, 1 '45); Ciaran Hunt; Conor Fallon(1-2); Daniel Byrne(0-1); Tomas Gilleran; Niall Naughton(0-1); Declan Brennan;

St. Dominics 0-7 St. Croans 0-5

Knockcroghery on Saturday 12th April @6:30pm. Ref: P Fannon

In keeping with the tradition of this fixture over the past number of years, St. Dominics and St. Croans produced as poor an hour of football as you're likely to see. Played in very cold conditions, the game started well for the home side. Conor Fallon pointed in the first minute after some great passing. Another from an acute angle from Niall Naughton followed and shortly afterwards, Daniel Byrne ensured the entire half forward line scored when he sent over number three compared to the Ballintubber sides solitary score. That was as good as the game got however, Miley pulled down the St. Croans full forward in the square but made amends with a good save but two frees allowed them to even the score before half time.

The away side started the better in the second half going two in front before Naughton, now operating at full forward got his second. 3 wides apiece followed before St. Dominics eventually levelled through Finnerans free. The final quarter was dominated by the away side, but try as they might, they could not disect the posts despite a number of kickable frees. St. Dominics will be happiest though as they played way below their abilities and the difference in class was shown with our ability to take our opportunities. A poor kickout lead to a goal chance for Croans but it was pushed wide, and then a Finneran free the other end was punched over the bar by captain, Tom Gately and when Beades found Seamie McKeown free two minutes later, the small man duly tapped over. To win playing poorly is the sign of a good team, but had St. Croans taken some of their opportunities, the score would have been quite different.

Most impressive for St. Dominics were Trevor Brennan, Tom Gately, and Tomas Gilleran.

TEAM: Mark Miley; Andrew Grady; Padraig Naughton; Trevor Brennan; Ian Naughton; Anthony Beades; Tom Gately(0-1); Arthur Beades; Michael Finneran(0-1, 1 free); Niall Naughton(0-2); Conor Fallon (0-1); Tomas Gilleran; Ciaran Hunt; Declan Brennan; SUBS: Declan Dowling for Hunt('46); Seamus McKeown for Gilleran ('52)

St. Dominics 1-13 Tulsk 3-3

Tulsk on Sunday 6th April @2:30pm. Ref: P Fannon

St. Dominics returned to winning ways on Sunday with a hard fought win over Tulsk. Overall a good perfomance from the lads but some defensive lapses allowed Tulsk to remain in contention for the 60 minutes.

Two early points from Conor Fallon and a free by the same player got us off to a good start. Impressive debutant Daniel Byrne showed some great work ethic and was rewarded with two points as St. Dominics threatened to pull away, but hesitancy in defence let Tulsk creep in for a poached goal to give them a one point lead, Michael Finnerans run ended in a punched point just after to leave the score at the break level 1-3 to 0-6.

On the restart, Tulsk again took advantage of a mistake to rattle the onion bag and give themselves a three point cushion. However, St. Dominics stepped up a gear over the next ten minutes. First , Finneran hit over a '45 before A great move involving Beades, Fallon, and Gilleran led to Declan Brennans cool finish to regain the lead. Further frees by Finneran and Fallon rewarded some fine open play. Ciaran Hunt was unlucky aith a palmed attempt which came came back off the post, but Finneran hit over his second '45 of the day before Conor Fallon sent over another super point.

A speculative lob from the Tulsk attack sailed all the way to the net in between two fine Gilleran points and St. Dominics were good value for their win, though an improvement will certainly be required against St. Croans next week. Best for St. Dominics were Trevor Brennan and the two Naughtons in defence with Anthony, particularly impressive in his new centre back role. Up front Daniel Byrne went a long way towards staking his claim for a regular spot.

St. Dominics 3-3 St. Brigids 2-12 brigids

Kiltoom on Good Friday 21st March @7pm. Ref: M Parker

St. Dominics were defeated in a controversial game in Kiltoom on Good Friday evening. At one stage, seven points up, St. Dominics somehow conspired to lose by 6 points. An early goal by Declan Brennan allowed St. Dominics to remain in contention despite shooting 6 wides in the first half. Another point by Brennan and one by Finneran left the score 1-3 to 0-5 at the break.

St. dominics came out with all guns blazing in the second period. First, Ultan Kellys wild shot seemed to be heading well wide only for Ciaran Hunt to get a boot to it and poach a goal. 1 minute later, a great run by Finneran got a boot to a and a superb run from Finneran was complemented by an even better shot left St. Dominics 7 points ahead and in command. However a combination of poor shooting, and sloppy passing allowed St. Brigids to eke their way back into the game. St. Dominics failed to score in the last 28 minutes of the contest in which time the home side kicked 2-7 .

St. Dominics 1-7 Michael Glaveys 0-7

Ballinlough on Sunday 9th March @12pm. Ref: V Hardiman

St. Dominics got off to a steady start in their attempt to bounce back up to Senior League in Ballinlough. The opening half was played in good condition and Conor Fallon opened the scoring with a free before Glaveys equalised. Another point by Fallon and a free from Finneran put St. Dominics 3 points to one ahead. Dominant in almost every sector of the pitch, Tomas Gilleran slotted over from an acute angle before the excellent Declan Brennan sent Ultan Kelly through on goal. Somehow the ball stayed out after hitting the crossbar. A further Finneran free left it 0-5 to 0-2 at half time.

St. Dominics opened the scoring after half time, Conor Fallon from a free after Brennan was fouled. Brennan was again creator supreme when the Doms finally goaled. He won a long ball in from debutant John Tuohy and turned his marker before hitting a sublime pass to Ultan Kelly whos finish was equally as clinical. Some of the old failings re appeared however and despite total dominance on the field, 5 missed chances in a row, including two frees were squandered. A bizzarre decision by the ref to award a 14 yard free when Ciaran Hunt was hauled down just outside the small square earned another point for Fallon, but St. Dominics began to relax top early and alloweed Glaveys to score the remaining 4 points of the contest. The full back line was as solid as ever for St. Dominics while Declan Brennan was the man of the match for his consistency and class.

St. Dominics : Anthony Kelly; David Corcoran; Padraig Naughton; Andrew Grady; Tom Gately; Mark Miley; Anthony Naughton; John Tuohy; Michael Finneran(0-2, 2 FREES); Conor Fallon(0-4, 3 frees); Niall Naughton; Tomas Gilleran(0-1); Ultan Kelly(1-0); Ciaran Hunt; Declan Brennan; Top of page
