Our U-16 Footballers played Strokestown in the Championship Semi-Final on Sat last in Termonbarry. This was an excellent Game of Football by two very strong Teams. Dominics had most of the possession in the first half but just could not get the scores while Strokestown were more econominal and chalked up a Goal and three points in the first 15 Minutes. A few positional changes brought Dominics back into the Game and a great David McDonnell Goal and a Timmy Geraghty point along with a couple of pointed frees left Dominics up by a point at the break. Strokestown had the breeze in the second half but Dominics wre playing the better Football and when Sean Dervan slotted home a penalty midway in the half to move four points clear it looked like victory but a lapse of consentration allowed Strokestown to grap a Goal from a quick free and two quick points in succession and despite great effort from Dominics it was Strokestown who secured a Final spot by a margin of two points. This was a great performance by the Dominics lads and while they may be disappointed they are top of the table in the League and will no doubt have a chance for revenge when the League Semi-Finals come around. We wish a speedy recovery to David McDonnell who sustained a nasty finger injury in the Game and would like to thank the Strokestown physio who attended to him.
Our U-14 Footballers started off their league campaign on last Thursday evening when they took on St Brigids in Kiltoom. This was a very even Match by two young Teams played in a very sporting manner with Dominics emerging Winners by one point. This Weeks Game against Oran has been postponed due to the U-14 Hurling Semi –Final but Training takes place on Tues at 7.30 and on Thur at 7pm.
Please note that if you are not already registered contact your Secretary or any of your Trainers.
St. Dominics 2-10 St. Michaels 2-10
St. Dominics again let a 6 point lead slip and ended Satuday evening with one point instead of two after a last minute goal from a free allowed St. Michaels to level the match.
Playing with th e breeze in the first half, St. Dominics had led by 1-6 to 3 points late in teh 1st half but slack defending allowed the visitors in for a goal to leave just three between the sides at half time 1-7 to 1-4.
A '45 from Michael Finneran and point from Niall Naughton levelled the sides at two apiece before St. Dominics went through a purple patch. Finneran fielded a kickout and his sol through the defence set up a shot from 16 yards for conor fallon who hit the top corner. Two impressive Finneran scores from outside the 50 yard line, and a rampaging David corcoran run from corner back to score a sweet point, it was all one way traffic. However sloppy passing and poor handling broke down many attacks. Ultan Kelly, on as a substitute hit his first of the afternoon, before a rare Cootehall attack yielded a goal.
Again starting brightly in the second half, Finnerans long probing ball found Kelly who made no mistake straight in front of goal, but again, the similar pattern of turnovers cost the home side. Whereas our attacks broke down, St. Michaels greater economy in the esecond half allowed them to keep in touch. Only Conor Fallon scored for St. Dominics in the final 10 minutes and with time almost up, we appeared to have ridden our luck. St. Michaels 14 yard free in the dying minutes however ,somehow found its way to the back of the net to give them a draw , somewhat against the run of play.
St. Dominics: Aidan Fallon; Trevor Brennan; Padraig Naughton; David Corcoran(0-1); Ian Naughton; Mark Miley; Tom Gately; Arthur Beades; Michael Finneran(0-3, 1 '45); Ciaran Hunt; Conor Fallon(1-2); Daniel Byrne(0-1); Tomas Gilleran; Niall Naughton(0-1); Declan Brennan;
SUBS: U Kelly(1-2) for Brennan('22); S McKeown for Gilleran(ht); P Dolan for Miley (42); D Dowling for D Byrne(inj)(50)
